This is the book I’d hoped to find! I’ve skimmed and read chunks here and there so far, which confirmed my initial impressions — it is a great guide to maximize the quality of my life by maximizing my use of breath and breathing.
My review continues with some of my personal exploration in this area, and if you don’t want to bother with it, just know this: Buy the book!
24 years ago, while I was working as a personal trainer at a large chain fitness club, I took a phone call from a young man that no one else wanted. He asked if i knew anything about breathing exercises, did the club have any classes in breath training? To this day, he is the only person I’ve ever encountered with such an interest.
I had to say no, the club didn’t address it as a separate entity, but proper breathing during resistance exercise (“strength training,” usually with “free” weights or weighted machines) is always stressed. I myself actually did know a bit beyond that, because a chiropractor some years earlier had introduced me to yoga-type breathing while stretching. I used it both while exercising and to help me sleep — I’ve had intractable insomnia since I was a kid.
The young man and I had an interesting discussion and that was the end of it. Fast forward ~4 years, and I got a more structured intro to “best breathing practices” as an integral part of a stress reduction program based on Jon Kabat-Zinn’s cardiac recovery program he developed at Mass General (I think that’s where it was, memory is a little fuzzy now).
I’ve continued to read, study, and utilize what I learn as I’ve struggled with dissolving a bad marriage, disability, and some truly life-altering events in the past 6-8 years. But I’ve felt kind of stuck recently, and with the encouragement of a longtime therapist and friend, have resumed searching for the latest science on the subject of breathing.
Just within the last few weeks, I encountered the concept of Heart Rate Variability (HRV). On page 31 of this book by Dan BrulÄ—, is his section on HRV and longevity. He credits a Dr. David O’Hare, who has been practicing and researching this subject since 1977. HRV is definitively linked to longevity; we don’t have much variability when we are stressed, it turns out. Can *you* slow your breathing down, comfortably, to just 6 breaths a minute? I can’t either, YET!
This is just one of the priceless nuggets you will find within “Just Breathe.” Thank you so much, Dan, for creating this book. I am excited about the potential for a much happier, healthier life, all through better, more conscious breathing. And I hereby pledge to practice relentlessly!

Not much about science and the anatomy of breathing but very interesting techniques. Dani Brulé offers an holistic approach of this art. His approach of combining breathing and intention is I think very unique and powerful. A bit too many references to other experts abd techniques. It sometimes feel like a compilation of different breathing schools and arts rather than his own method and experiences.

The only negative about this book…is that I wish I would have read it YEARS ago! Love love the information and style of how this book was written. I will continue to re-read and refer back to this book as much as possible. Definitely worth getting a hard copy, so you can highlight and mark pages. What are you waiting for? Get this book…and just breathe!

Excellent book if you want to remember how we used to breathe before all the trauma. I’ve been using the techniques in the book and have lost ten pounds in a month. I haven’t changed a darn thing, otherwise. I’ve been reading a few books on the subject. This one is excellent because it takes from other sources.
it’s a great how to book and is already paying dividends. Pam Grout’s book is great too.

I started by listening to the book and liked it so much I bought a copy. It’s helped me with simple breathing exercises and is a great resource for matching different breathing exercises to situations or what I’d like to develop. Definitely a worthwhile book and very accessible w/regards to the material.

Dan Brule has produced an insightful and fairly inspiring book that’s a great ‘starter’ for the deep breathing inclined. There’s a bit of light narcissism (I could care less about all the people he has met/ knows), but it’s soft and somewhat charming. The writing is relatively poor (hackneyed metaphors, tired platitudes), but I didn’t buy this to have Virginia Woolf give me breathing advice. There’s a sincerity and clarity to the writing I appreciate, and the almost textbook breathing exercises are helpful and have produced some wonderful changes in my high-strung nature. I do find it funny that he asks us to disconnect from the outer world, and then repeatedly references how this could help in business (capitalism), relate us to the ‘historical’ Jesus (institutionalized religion) and the ‘historical’ Buddha (metaphorical religion). To truly find an inner peace subscribing to these constructs seems counter-intuitive, when we should be decentralizing the role of outside sources (especially those based on iron age thinking or fundamental human greed). Nonetheless, I enjoyed the book, found great value in many of his teachings and would buy him a beer anytime.

I highly recommend to read this book. Breathing is an antidote stressful situation and help instantly. It’s so helpful when you find you way to breath it really change your game. My favourite is Mark Divine tactical breathing what you will find inside the book; there’s so many technics, you will find your favourite too, or many. I am quite nervous, introvert, and when I approach attractive woman, I just breathe; using this tactical breathing, and voilà , I am relaxed like instant, I can handle situation. I am very thankful for that book, so thank you so much for writer Dan Brule for a great book! And special thanks for Mark Divine for the tactical breathing technique! Highly recommended! Buy this now! You will love it

Quelques éléments de la biographie de l’auteur pour éclairer son parcours et surtout des pratiques assez nombreuses à expérimenter, de quoi explorer le domaine de la respiration ..
